Iran’s audibly-challenged cadet freestyle wrestlers have ended their campaign at the 2016 World Deaf Wrestling Cadet and Junior Freestyle Championship in Tehran, claiming the top position in the tournament.
On Tuesday, Iran’s Hossein Fathi Balabiglou emerged triumphant over his Russian opponent in the final encounter of 42-kilogram weight category at Tehran’s Shohadaye Haftom Tir Sports Hall, and clinched the gold medal.
In the 46-kilogram class, Mohammad Mohammadi Soroush downed a contestant from Uzbekistan to pick up the second gold medal for Iran.
The developments came on the same day that Reza Taheri conceded defeat against Bulgarian wrestler Panayot Dimitrov in the 50-kilogram weight class, and claimed the silver medal.
Iran’s Naser Karimi lost to a competitor from Mongolia in the last competition of the 54-kilogram category to clinch another silver medal.
Alireza Kazemi and Sajjad Ajdeh also received a gold and silver medal in the 58-kilogram and 63-kilogram weight categories respectively.
Mehdi Malakouti added another silver medal to Iran’s tally in the 85-kilogram weight class.
Additionally, Erfan Toutounchi and Abolfazl Arab Hounjani earned two bronze medals for Iran in the 69-kilogram and 100-kilogram sections.
Iranian cadet freestyle wrestlers won the contests with 89 points. The Russian team finished in the second place with 87 points. Turkey accumulated 65 points to finish in the third place.
The 2016 World Deaf Wrestling Cadet and Junior Freestyle Championship started in Tehran on May 3, and will finish on May 4.
