Iranian junior wrestlers runner-up at world championship

Iran’s deaf junior Greco-Roman wrestling team

Iran’s audibly-challenged junior Greco-Roman wrestlers have finished as the overall vice champion at the 2016 World Deaf Wrestling Cadet and Junior Greco-Roman Championship in Tehran, and landed in the second position at the end of the international tournament.

On Monday, Alireza Daneshyar overpowered a representative from Azerbaijan and snatched Iran’s sole junior medal in the final bout of the 60-kilogram weight category at Tehran’s Shohadaye Haftom Tir Sports Hall.

Mojtaba Asad Bijavand, Mostafa Mirali, Alireza Sadeghinejad, Mohammad Reza Sadri and Seyed Amir Hossein Razaghi also added five silver medals to Iran's tally at the sporting event in 50-kilogram, 74-kilogram, 84-kilogram, 96-kilogram and 120-kilogram weight divisions respectively.

Iran’s Mohammad Javad Yousefi and Mojtaba Oladghobad also stood on the bronze podium in the 55-kilogram and 66-kilogram classes.

The Russian junior Greco-Roman wrestling team collected 75 points and was named the top-ranked squad. The hosts occupied the second place with 71 points, and third-place Turks bagged 64 points.

Iran’s deaf cadet Greco-Roman wrestling team

On Sunday, Iranian cadet Greco-Roman wrestlers ended their campaign at the 2016 World Deaf Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship with two gold medals, one silver and six bronze medals.

The Iranian team finished in the second place with 58 points. Russia won the contests with 94 points and Turkey earned 24 points to finish third-placed.

The 2016 World Deaf Wrestling Cadet and Junior Greco-Roman Championship started on May 1 and wrapped up the following day.

Representatives from Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan took part in the two-day tournament.
