Wood industry

Just about seven percent of the total area of Iran is covered with forests, so a lot of the wood needed for various products has been imported.

Certain companies in the wood industry have created projects for tree cultivation, in order to reduce reliance on imported raw material.

While Iran does export its furniture to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Oman, the wood industry is one that has not been heavily invested in.

Last year Iran’s exports of furniture topped 36 million dollars in the first nine months. There are well over 100,000 big and small woodworking units active across the country. This industry employs around eight percent of the Iranian workforce.

One of the challenges they face is upgrading the machines and equipment necessary for productions. Going off of information from the Association of Furniture Makers, Iran is self-sufficient in the production of office furniture. Nearly all office furniture in Iran’s market are domestically produced and their popularity among Iranians is a testament to the high quality of these products.
