President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine says his Western allies should fulfill their promises to supply his country with weapons.

Zelensky said on Sunday that the decisions made in July at the NATO summit in Washington “as well as those adopted during the Ramstein meetings regarding air defenses for Ukraine have still not been fully implemented.”

"Every week, the Russian war continues only because the Russian army retains its ability to terrorize Ukraine and exploit its superiority in the sky,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader said earlier this week that he had discussed with partners and the United States the possibility of granting his government licenses to produce air defense systems and missiles.

“This is the kind of strength that makes lasting peace achievable," Zelensky claimed.

He made the remarks while admitting that Russian forces had launched hundreds of strikes on Ukraine over the past week.

Last week, Russia shot down several US-made long-range missiles, known as ATACMS, over the Russian territory, according to the Russian defense ministry.

The ministry also said Sunday that its air defense systems seized the village of Nadiya in eastern Luhansk. The army, it said, had also shot down 10 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory on Saturday morning.

Russia launched its “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022 partly to prevent NATO’s eastward expansion after warning that the US-led military alliance was following an “aggressive line” against Moscow.

Washington and its Western allies have flooded Ukraine with a vast volume of Western arms and ammunition since then.

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he was working to set up a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “to get that war over with.”
