Iran’s Maghsoodloo wins title at Mumbai International Chess Tournament

Junior Iranian chess grandmaster Parham Maghsoodloo has put a brilliant end to his campaign at the third edition of IIFL Wealth 3rd Mumbai International Chess Tournament in India, and finished first to pick up the trophy at the end of the sporting event.

The 17-year-old Iranian athlete earned the title on Sunday after he managed to overcome his Italian opponent Alberto David at the Bandra Kurla Complex, the Islamic Republic of Iran Chess Federation website reported.

American chess grandmaster Timur Gareyev finished third in the competitions.

The third edition of IIFL Wealth 3rd Mumbai International Chess Tournament started on December 30, 2017 and finished on January 7, 2018.

The tournament attracted 315 chess players from 23 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, France, Hungary, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Italy, Malaysia, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

Last September, the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) or World Chess Federation awarded the grandmaster title to Maghsoodloo over his commendable performance at the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad 2016 in Slovakia.

The World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad 2016 started in Poprad on July 21 and finished on July 30. It was held under the supervision of the FIDE, and used the Swiss system for pairings.
