Iran wins path to World Cup kabaddi semifinals

The Iranian men’s national kabaddi team has pummeled the United States in its last encounter in the preliminary round of the 6th edition of Dr BR Ambedkar World Cup Kabaddi in India to impressively advance to the semifinal stage of the tournament.

The Iranian sportsmen maintained their winning streak on Sunday and demonstrated their class during the Group B match in the Tarn Taran Sahib city of the northern Indian state of Punjab for a clear victory of 45-34 over their American opponents, the website of the Kabaddi Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran reported.

Iran, which ranks top in Group B, is now awaiting a match with the second-spot team from Group A in a semifinal fixture on Tuesday.

The sixth edition of Dr BR Ambedkar World Cup Kabaddi opened in Punjab, India, on November 3, and will wrap up on November 17, 2016.

The Islamic Republic of Iran was pitted against Argentina, Australia, Kenya, Tanzania and the US in Group B.

Britain, Canada, Sri Leone, Sri Lanka, Sweden, and the hosts India were drawn in Group A.

The Iranian team comprises of Alireza Safari, Behnam Javidi, Mostafa Sadeqzadeh, Payman Eskandaria, Hamid Ziraki, Amir Dehqan, Maysam Ghanbari, Behnam Khabbazi, Mohammad Moqaddasi, Saeed Jahandar, Mojtaba Shadkam, Shayan Naddafi, Nasser Sahraei and Payman Cheraqi. It is led by head coach Morteza Shahidi.
