Iran stunned by Poland in 2016 Kabaddi World Cup

The Iranian men’s national team has been hit by a major shock at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in India, and fallen to the Polish outfit at the prestigious international sports event.

On Monday, the Iranian squad went down 25-41 to the Eastern European team in its last Group B match at the TransStadia Arena in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad.

Polish kabaddi players, who are just two-year-old in the sport, made a promising start and Piotr Pamulak scored with a two-point raid to lead his side 4-2 in the third minute.

Iranians then tried hard and managed to level the game at 5-5 in the seventh minute. Poland's Michal Spiczko, however, scored three raid points and the Poles were up 9-7 after 10 minutes.

Jan Baranowicz then added a two-point raid in the 14th minute, and gave the European side a 13-9 advantage.

Iran forced a super tackle in the 15th minute and narrowed the deficit to 11-13. After that, Poland availed itself of Iran’s numerous errors to surge ahead and widened the lead to 17-14 at the break.

After the interval, Spiczko scored two more points and Poland was leading 23-15 in the 23rd minute.

The Iranians scored their fifth tackle point in the 25th minute as their Polish opponents were 25-16 ahead.

Poland continued to deliver a sparkling performance and finally wrapped up the encounter with a 41-25 score line.

The 2016 Kabaddi World Cup began in Ahmedabad on October 7 and will finish on October 22.

Kabaddi is the national game of Bangladesh and also the state game of the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Punjab.

India has the most successful kabaddi team on the world stage, having won every world cup and Asian games title so far, in both men’s and women’s categories.
