The Iranian men’s national team has claimed the vice champion title at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in India after being defeated by the hosts at the title clash.
On Saturday, the resolute Iranian outfit got off to a sound start in its last encounter at the TransStadia Arena in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, living up to expectations in pursuit of world championship.
The Indian side, in return, fought hard and refused to capitulate, making the match between two titans of the sport attractive to the fans.
Indian players Sandeep Narwal and Thakur gave the Indian fans a reason to smile iin the third minute when they scored raid points and put the hosts ahead at 2-0.
Iran’s captain Me’raj Sheikh, however, was quick to score two points and bring the score at level 2-2 a minute later.
The game proceeded by Iran scoring yet more points, until the 10th minute, when Indian skipper Anup Kumar notched a bonus point to level the scores at 6-6.
Sheikh carried out an outstanding raid later, putting Iran in the lead at 9-7.
India’s defense scored a tackle point in the 15th minute, with Mohit Chhillar executing a dazzling super tackle in a while to slash Iran’s lead to just one point.
The Iranian team then decided to pull off the feat it used against South Korea during the semi-final showdown.
It shut down Indian raiders and disallowed them to tally points. The Iranians ultimately clinched the first half by 18 points to 13.
After the interval, the Indians mounted a dramatic comeback. They managed to overcome Iran 38-29 at the end and lifted the trophy.
The 2016 Kabaddi World Cup began in Ahmedabad on October 7, and came to a close on October 22.
Kabaddi is the national game of Bangladesh and also the state game of the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Punjab.
India has the most successful kabaddi team on the world stage, having won every world cup and Asian games title so far, in both men’s and women’s categories.
