National Iranian freestyle wrestling team has displayed great skill in the Freestyle World Cup 2016, which is currently underway in the United States, and triumphed over the Azerbaijani outfit.
On Saturday afternoon, wrestling enthusiasts jubilated at The Forum in city of Inglewood, southwest of downtown Los Angeles, as they witnessed the Iranian squad win over the Azeri team 5-3 in a Pool B encounter.
In the 57-kilogram weight class, Hassan Rahimi, a four-time world medalist and 2013 world champion, defeated his Azeri competitor Makmud Magomedov 11-1.
Behnam Ehsanpour registered Iran’s second victory against Azerbaijan after he beat Akhmednabi Gvarzatilov in the 61-kilogram weight category.
Maysam Nasiri was also the winner in his bout against European champion Makmud Magomedov 7-6 in the 65-kilogram weight class.
Mostafa Hosseinkhani, however, conceded defeat in the 70-kilogram weight category, and lost to Hajimurad Omarov 3-6.
Later, Iranian freestyle wrestler Hassan Yazdani recorded a 9-5 victory in his contest against Ashraf Aliev of Azerbaijan in the 74-kilogram weight category.
Nevertheless, Alexander Gostiev of Azerbaijan defeated Iranian athlete Alireza Karimi 5-2 in the 86-kilogram weight class.
In the 97-kilogram weight category, Azeri contestant Aslanbek Alborov overpowered Iran’s Abbas Tahan 2-1.
Iranian man-mountain Komeil Ghasemi overwhelmed Said Gamidov 6-4 in the 125-kilogram weight class though.
The Freestyle World Cup 2016 started in Inglewood, near Los Angeles, the US, on Saturday and will finish the next day.
Pool A consists of Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Mongolia. Iran has been drawn in Pool B along with the United States, Azerbaijan, and India.
The national Iranian freestyle wrestling team is in search of the Fifth Straight Title at the two-day prestigious sporting event.
The results from the groups will determine the final placement matches on Sunday afternoon.
