Support UN Security Council-mandated Gaza ceasefire: Dawn tells Biden

Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) has called on the US administration to show support for the United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Washington-based human rights and peace advocacy group urged President Joe Biden’s administration to stop hindering the resolution.

DAWN’s executive director, Sarah Leah Whitson, said in a statement on Monday that the Biden administration’s policies have not only failed to secure a ceasefire but also aided and abetted “Israel’s belligerence such that we now face the likely prospect of Israel dragging us into a war with Iran.”

“Only a UN-mandated ceasefire and arms embargo will halt the needless killing and quash the fanatics lobbying to expand the war for even more killing.”

DAWN said the US should end its support for the regime’s heinous crimes against humanity in Gaza by suspending the military assistance and ending combat operations that “have made the US a party to Israel’s conflict, inviting retaliatory attacks on US forces and risking an even broader regional war with Iran.”

“The only way to prevent a full-scale war in the region is declaring an immediate arms embargo on Israel and imposing a ceasefire in Gaza, with sanctions for non-compliance,” said Raed Jarrar, DAWN’s advocacy director.

“Without a ceasefire in Gaza, there won’t be a de-escalation with Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, or Iran.”

Israel has massacred nearly 42,000 helpless people in Gaza since October 2023.

The regime has expanded the scope of the military campaign, launching airstrikes on Lebanon and Syria.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to cease its attacks in early 2024, ruling that the Tel Aviv criminal activities were in violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. It was only mere words, however.

The UN court found that there was a plausible basis for a case of genocide against Israel.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor in May requested arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant for the crimes of using starvation as a method of warfare, intentionally attacking civilians, willful killing, and extermination.

The ICJ issued a second, separate advisory opinion in July 2024, ruling that the Israel regime's occupation, including of the Gaza Strip prior to October 7, 2023, was illegal.

It ordered the Israeli forces to evacuate the occupied Palestinian territory and ordered the United Nations and third-party states to stop supplying arms and ammunition to Tel Aviv. Mere words again.

The Biden administration has ignored the court rulings and countless other findings against the regime that proved Israel had violated the laws of war and committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Till now, the Biden administration has repeatedly used its veto power and the threat of its veto to block efforts to bring about a ceasefire resolution through the Security Council.

It goes without saying that a ceasefire in Gaza would bolster efforts to de-escalate tensions, stopping the war from evolving into a regional war with global repercussions.
