At least three senior commanders of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on an apartment building in Beirut after midnight, the first time that such raids have targeted the heart of the Lebanese capital since the outbreak of the war in Gaza last year.

Television footage showed the partially flattened floor of the building targeted by the strike in the Kola neighborhood, which lies near the road linking Beirut to its airport.

The Palestinian resistance group identified the victims as Mohammed Abed al-Al, a member of its political bureau and head of the military-security department, Imad Odeh, a member of its military department and military command in Lebanon, and Abdul Rahman Abed al-Al.

An official with Lebanese Civil Defense, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the airstrike also wounded 16 people.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine was founded by George Habash in 1967 as an umbrella organization for Marxist-Leninist and Arab nationalist groups. The PFLP has consistently been the second-largest of the groups forming the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the largest being Fatah.

Its military wing, known as the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, is active in Gaza where it has worked alongside Hamas.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said at least 105 people have been killed over the past 24 hours as Israeli warplanes continue nonstop bombardment across the country.

The ministry added that Israeli attacks in the southern districts of Marjayoun and Nabatieh killed at least seven people and injured about 40 more over the same period.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has launched a series of attacks on Israeli military positions and illegal settlements in northern occupied Palestinian territories in response to Israeli airstrikes on Lebanese towns.

Hezbollah announced the strikes in a statement issued on Monday morning, stressing they were in support of Palestinian resistance in Gaza and in defense of Lebanon.

The resistance group announced, “In support of our steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their valiant and honorable resistance, and in defense of Lebanon and its people, the fighters of the Islamic Resistance, on Monday, 30-09-2024, targeted the ‘Sadah’ site with artillery shells, hitting it directly.”

In addition to artillery, Hezbollah fired Fadi-1 missiles at the Ovik camp and deployed a squadron of drones against Israeli forces stationed at the Ali-atakim camp.
