Lebanon's PM says up to 1 million displaced amid Israel's attacks
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati says up to one million people have been displaced by Israel’s attacks on the country.
Following an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday, Mikati told reporters that his country “is experiencing the largest wave of displacement in its history.”
He said, "The estimated number is very high and may reach one million" — which would amount to roughly a sixth of Lebanon's population.
“Our priority is to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression through continued diplomatic efforts. We have no other choice.”
Mikati’s remarks came as Israel’s warplanes bombed Lebanon, including the capital Beirut for a seventh day on Sunday.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, at least 11 people were killed in an airstrike on a house in the town of Ain in the Bekaa Valley in the northeast.
At least 700 people, including at least 50 children have been killed across the country since Monday.
The UN said Friday that Lebanon was facing its deadliest period in years, with its hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.
"The recent escalations in Lebanon are nothing short of catastrophic," said Imran Riza, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon.
The international community has warned that Israel’s aggression on Lebanon could escalate the regime's genocidal war in the besieged Gaza Strip into a wider regional conflict.
