Mourning Imam Hussein
Millions of Muslims in Iran and other countries around the world are holding mourning ceremonies on the eve of Ashura. People attend mourning processions to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Millions of black-clad mourners visit the Imam’s shrine in the Iraqi city of Karbala. It was on Ashura, the tenth day of the lunar month of Moharram, that Imam Hussein and 72 of his companions were martyred in an unequal battle with the Umayyad regime in 680 Ad. The day before Ashura, known as Tasu’a, marks the valor and sacrifices of Imam Hussein’s brother, Abbas. Centuries later, the legacy of Imam Hussein and his companions lives on and inspires not only Muslims but all those who fight oppression.
Gaza carnage rages
Over nine months into Israel’s bloodbath in Gaza, the regime keeps pounding the devastated Palestinian territory, killing more innocent women and children. In central Gaza, at least 3 Palestinians have been killed and many more injured in an attack that hit a house in Deir el-Balah. At least five others, including children, were killed in a bombing of an area in al-Maghazi refugee camp. Three Gazans, including a child, were also murdered in a separate attack. The Israeli military also launched deadly attacks on two refugee camps in central Gaza. To the South, regime forces leveled several buildings in Khan Yunis by air strikes. The regime also blew up a number of buildings in Rafah, leaving deaths and injuries. The Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip has killed over 38,600 people and injured nearly 90,000 others.
EU bans on Iran extended
The European Union has extended unilateral sanctions against Iran over alleged military support for Russia as well as regional resistance groups. The European Council announced the extension of sanctions for another year. The blacklist hits 12 Iranian individuals and 9 entities and includes an asset freeze, prohibiting financial transactions, and a travel ban to the EU, among other restrictive measures. Tehran has, time and again, dismissed these allegations as unfounded and politically-motivated; a stance also echoed by Moscow. The EU’s announcement comes a day after the anniversary of the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, which was derailed by the US unilateral withdrawal in 2018. The EU had pledged to mitigate the impacts of Washington's departure from the pact but failed to follow through.
