Islamic Jihad's medical team has prevented an Israeli captive from attempting suicide due to his mental state, following new conditions imposed by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a ceasefire deal in the war-torn Gaza Strip.

In a video posted on Telegram on Thursday, Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Hamza said that the Israeli captive, whose life was saved by the medical team, was set to be released as part of the initial phase of the prisoner exchange deal between the two sides.

He added that mental pressure from the delays and failures in negotiations for his release drove the captive to attempt suicide.

The spokesman also noted that as a result of the attempted suicide, al-Quds Brigades has already boosted security measures and increased prisoner safety protocols.

In related developments, Israeli media reported an increase in suspected military suicides during the ongoing war on Gaza. Statistics indicate that 38 soldiers died by suicide in 2023 and 2024, with 28 occurring after the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023.

By comparison, Israeli military data recorded 14 suicides in 2022 and 11 in 2021.

Furthermore, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth disclosed in a report that 891 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the onset of the current war on Gaza, marking the deadliest toll in the regime’s history.

During Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, resistance groups took 251 Israeli settlers and soldiers captive in southern Israel, most of whom are held by the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement, the dominant military force in the blockaded Palestinian territory.

Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November.

Many Israeli captives have so far been killed in the regime’s strikes in Gaza. Hamas has repeatedly said that there is no alternative other than “a ceasefire, the withdrawal of the occupation forces, and the implementation of a prisoner exchange agreement” in exchange for the release of the Israeli captives.

Netanyahu has long been obstructing mediation for a truce and a deal to release the captives still held by Palestinian groups in Gaza.
