Iran defense doctrine
Iran’s defense minister has reiterated that the country will not accept any geopolitical changes in the region. Brigadier General Mohammadreza Ashtiani issued the warning after a high-ranking Iranian defense delegation traveled to Azerbaijan for talks with officials there. He, however, gave assurances that no war would break out in the region. He emphasized that Iran’s stance on regional developments is crystal clear. This comes amid rising tensions between the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia. Iran has maintained its neutrality in the conflict while stressing that contested territories should be returned to their real owners. Iran has also warned against any military movements along the country’s borders.
Libya deadly floods
Libya is reeling from catastrophic flooding caused by Mediterranean Storm Daniel at the weekend. The scale of the disaster remains unclear but thousands have been confirmed dead. Officials in eastern Libya have so far put the death toll at over 5,000. Almost half of the dead have been reported in the city of Derna. According to the International Federation of Red Cross, 10,000 others are still unaccounted for. The floods also caused dams and bridges to collapse near Derna, devastating a quarter of the city. Rescue teams are struggling to retrieve the bodies of victims that have been swept out to sea. The United Nations and several countries have offered to send aid and rescue teams. The precise number of the dead is hard to determine as communications with flood-hit zones have been cut off. A decade-long civil war is also hampering aid efforts.
Putin-Kim meeting
During his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed bilateral cooperation in various sectors and pledged to help Pyongyang build satellites. The two leaders also inspected Russia's space rocket assembly and launch sites as well. The summit has raised concerns among the US and its East Asian allies who suspect they could ink an arms deal given that Russia is at war with Ukraine. The DPRK and Russia had already denied such speculation but said they would boost their defense cooperation.
