Sudan fighting
Fighting has erupted between Sudan’s army and the country’s main paramilitary group, as the African nation is struggling to restore civilian rule following the 2021 coup. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has seized the presidential palace, the army chief’s residence, and the international airport in Khartoum. However, the military has denied the claims, saying it is fighting back. A medical body says at least three civilians have been killed in the clashes and nine others wounded. The fighting follows weeks of tensions between military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF over the planned integration of the group into the regular army. The integration was a key element of talks to finalize a deal that would return the country to civilian rule. The RSF says it won’t stop until it captures all the army bases.
Orthodox Easter event
Israeli forces have attacked Christians celebrating the Orthodox Holy Light ceremony in the Old City of al-Quds. The attacks occurred when thousands of Orthodox Christians filled the Old City, under the heavy presence of regime forces. Israel has significantly limited access to the event, citing safety concerns. Church leaders however have urged Christians to ignore the restrictions, calling the measure part of long-standing efforts by the regime to push out the local Christian community. Some church leaders have also voiced concern over what they describe as an environment of impunity in the face of rising acts of violence and vandalism targeting Christians and their properties in al-Quds. The Palestinian resistance movement, the Islamic Jihad, has condemned Israel's attack, describing it as racist and a violation of the rights of Christian citizens.
Europe food prices
New data indicates food prices in a number of European countries are drastically increasing amid an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis there. The French National Statistics Office says the price of cooking Cokovei, a French main dish, rose to nearly 20 Euros. That’s more than a 15 percent rise from a year earlier. The price of chicken also jumped by about 18%, while the price of carrots rose by more than 33 percent, compared to the same month a year ago. In Spain, the price of olive oil surged by more than 32 percent. Rice prices also saw a significant rise from a year ago. The prices are expected to stay high as drought-like conditions and historically-low level rains threaten crops. Europe is already grappling with a cost-of-living crisis with 93 percent of Europeans impacted by record-high inflation throughout the continent.
