US General Soleimani assassination
Iran says the US bears ultimate international responsibility for the 2020 assassination of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Tehran says the criminal and terrorist act will not go unpunished, and pledges to continue efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators. Iran says the assassination of Lieutenant General Soleimani sent a message of support to terror groups and exposed US lies that it fights terrorism worldwide. Iran says Soleimani was an anti-terror hero who helped promote peace and stability in the region and elsewhere in world. January 3 marks the anniversary of the assassination of the top Iranian general. Soleimani along with senior Iraqi commander Abu Mehdi al-Muhandis were killed in a US drone attack near Baghdad.

US COVID 'blizzard'
2022 begins on Saturday, but surging COVID cases led by the omicron variant are clouding the mood in many countries. That includes the US where health experts are warning people to be prepared for a challenging time in January. The country has already seen its daily new infections hit record highs. Based on the seven-day average, 24-hour case counts stood above 290,000 on Thursday. That happened for the second day in a row. Meantime, a Reuters tally shows at least 18 states have set records for new infections, while overall hospitalizations have increased 27 percent. The surge comes amid increased holiday travel, with New Year celebrations still to come. That’s why American health officials expect a further dramatic rise in infections in January, with some warning of a “viral blizzard.” They say people will have a hard time keeping everyday life operating.
