Malaysia politics

Malaysia’s former Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has secured a parliamentary majority, moving closer to forming a new government. According to local media, Ismail Sabri has received the backing of 114 out of 220 lawmakers. King Al-Sultan Abdullah has summoned the supporting lawmakers to his palace to verify their candidate. If appointed, Sabri would mark the return of the United Malays National Organization party to leadership, three years after it lost a general election over corruption allegations. On Monday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin stepped down after losing the majority in parliament. The resignation threw the country into fresh crisis amid a worsening coronavirus outbreak and weakening economy.
