US-China tensions
A senior US commander has condemned China for its military flights over the South China Sea earlier this week. The US Air Force's Pacific commander described as escalatory and destabilizing the flights off Malaysia and Taiwan. He accused China of using such flights to prompt a reaction from Taiwan and invoke cost for the island. Earlier this week, Malaysia said 16 Chinese military aircraft had flown over disputed waters off its eastern state of Sarawak. It accused Beijing of breaching its national sovereignty. China rejected that and said its air force abided by international law. China and several countries in the South China Sea region have been locked in a territorial dispute for years now.
