At least six people, including a six-year-old child, have been injured after a man equipped with a knife attacked passengers and ignited a flammable liquid on board a passenger train in northeast Switzerland.
The incident happened at around 2:20 pm on Saturday as the passenger train was traveling in the region of Saint Gallen between Buchs and Sennwald, which are directly on the Swiss side of the border with Liechtenstein, regional police said.
The attacker, a 27-year-old Swiss citizen, was also injured.
“According to the information we have for the time being, the 27-year-old Swiss man poured out a flammable liquid ... (which) caught fire,” police said in a statement, adding that the man “was also armed with at least one knife.”
A large number of emergency services, including police, firefighters, ambulances and three rescue helicopters, rushed to the scene, to assist those seriously injured.
The injured, including the suspect, were admitted to various hospitals with burn and stab wounds, the statement said.
Dozens of people were inside the passenger train at the time of the attack, but most of those escaped unhurt.
Police said the motive for the attack was unknown but noted that the possibility of terrorism seems “very, very far-fetched.”
Saint Gallen prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the attack.
