Iranian chair umpires Ali Katebi and Seyyed Adel Borghei are going to separately officiate at the first round of 2016 Davis Cup Group II Asia/ Oceania and Group II Americas tennis competitions early next month.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF), the governing body of world tennis, has invited Katebi to oversee the matches between Kuwaiti and Philippine tennis players, which will run from March 4 to 6 at Valle Verde Country Club of Pasig City in Manila, the Philippines.

The 2016 Davis Cup Group II Asia / Oceania matches will see Kuwaiti sportsmen Mohammad Ghareeb, Abdulrahman al-Awadhi, Abdulhamid Mubarak and Abdulhameed al-Shatti playing against Jeson Patrombon, Francis Casey Alcantara, Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales from the Philippines.

Moreover, Borghei will officiate the Group II Americas tennis competitions between Mexican and Guatemalan tennis players, which will open on March 4 and wrap up two days later.

Lucas Gomez, Hans Hach, Santiago Gonzalez and Miguel-Angel Reyes-Varela from Mexico will take on Guatemalan counterparts Christopher Diaz-Figueroa, Wilfredo Gonzalez, Christopher Vleeming Ortiz and Anthony Benjamin Vasquez Rodas.

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men’s tennis. It is run by the ITF and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format.

It is described by the organizers as the “World Cup of Tennis,” and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team.

The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 130 nations entered teams into the competition.

The most successful countries over the history of the tournament are the United States (winning 32 tournaments and finishing as runners-up 29 times) and Australia (winning 28 times, including four occasions with New Zealand as Australasia, and finishing as runners-up 19 times).
