A top Iranian official says enemies of Islam are hatching plots to fuel sectarian and religious discord in Iraq.
In a meeting with Chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Ammar Hakim in Tehran on Tuesday, Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said that religious leaders, political groups and even tribe chiefs in Iraq are expected to place emphasis on factors which would strengthen cooperation and rapport.
He pointed to Iraq’s strategic position and its great resources and said the restoration of security to the country would have positive consequences for all regional states.
Rafsanjani said the Iranian and Iraqi governments must improve political, economic and cultural ties as demanded by the two countries’ nations.
Hakim, for his part, said cooperation between the Iraqi army and popular forces has contributed to gradual withdrawal of Daesh terrorists from the country.
He added that the Daesh group’s crimes against Iraqis, particularly women and children, have led to hatred of the nation, even the Sunnis, towards the terrorists.
The ISCI chief emphasized that cooperation among Shia and Sunni Muslims in Iraq would block the infiltration of Daesh into the Arab state.
Daesh’s heinous campaign of terror spread from Syria to the northern and western parts of Iraq in June 2014.
The militants have been committing horrible crimes against all ethnic and religious groups in Iraq, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and others.
