The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has warned against the Israeli expansionist policy in Syria following the fall of the country’s former President Bashar al-Assad.
Referring to comments made by Israel's far-right communication minister Shlomo Karhi about reaching the gates of Damascus, Hamas said on Sunday that the remarks indicate the regime’s aggressive intentions toward the region and its people.
The movement stated that the terrorist Karai's storming of the courtyards of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque with dozens of extremist settlers and his issuing of statements confirming the aspirations of his rogue entity to reach the gates of Damascus is a confirmation of Israel's colonial intentions and ambitions towards the Arab lands.
The group called on Arab and Islamic nations to unite in the face of Israeli expansionist policy and confront the plans of “the fascist regime and its ongoing aggression.”
It called for effective action to stop the ongoing war of extermination against our people in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes on Syria, targeting positions of the country’s army and civilian infrastructure.
In the latest such attack, at least 11 were killed in an explosion near the capital Damascus.
An explosion at a weapons depot near Syria's capital Damascus on Sunday killed 11 people, a war monitor said, weeks after rebels ousted longtime leader Bashar al-Assad.
An official from a nearby area, requesting anonymity, told AFP that "an explosion of unknown origin" rocked the Adra industrial area, reporting an unspecified number of casualties and adding that rescue operations were ongoing.
Syria's official news agency SANA also reported arrests this week targeting fighters loyal to Assad in Hama and Latakia provinces, where weapons and ammunition were seized, without providing any figures.
Militants, led by HTS, took control of Damascus on December 8 and declared an end to Assad’s rule in a surprise offensive that was launched from their stronghold in northwestern Syria, reaching the capital in less than two weeks.
The HTS administration has repeatedly claimed they would respect the rights of all sects and religions in Syria.
The situation, however, remains very fluid and fragile, with a potential risk of further clashes as sectarian sentiments continue to boil over, amid the ongoing political instability and pressures on minority groups.
