Israeli forces continue the genocide in Gaza, killing more than 110 Palestinians, including civilians, journalists, and humanitarian workers, in just the past few days, with officials describing the situation as a “historical catastrophe.”
The Government Media Office (GMO) in Gaza announced on Monday that the Palestinian population is enduring a “historical catastrophe,” described as one of the most brutal in contemporary history, amid Israel’s persisting assaults.
The report highlighted ongoing violent actions by the Israeli military against civilians, displaced persons, journalists, medical personnel, civil defense teams, and humanitarian aid workers, which have resulted in the deaths of more than 110 Palestinians in the past few hours and days.
Dr. Ismail Thawabteh, the GMO director, condemned the Israeli military's actions as part of a prolonged escalation lasting more than 435 days, branding it a "crime of genocide" against the Palestinian people.
He pointed to the tragic loss of life among journalists, noting that nearly 200 have been killed in Gaza, including Al Jazeera photographer Ahmed Bakr al-Louh and Sanad News Agency correspondent Muhammad Jabr al-Qurenaoui, whose entire family perished in the violence.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recently said that Israel’s killing of Palestinian journalists is part of a “systematic attempt” to “censor information coming out” of Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
The GMO chief reported that the Israeli military forces targeted the field headquarters of Gaza's civil defense teams, raising to 94 the death toll of civil defense personnel.
In one of the most devastating strikes, at least 43 Palestinians were killed in an attack on the Khalil Awida School in Beit Hanoun, where many displaced individuals sought refuge.
Additional casualties were reported with 42 fatalities at the al-Nuseirat refugee camp, and the al-Qurenaoui family being specifically targeted in the al-Bureij camp.
The situation further deteriorated with the bombing of the Deir al-Balah municipality, which resulted in the death of Mayor Dr. Diab Al-Jaru and 11 others, raising concerns about the Israeli regime's intent to create a governance void in Gaza, according to the GMO report.
Since the onset of the war on October 2023, four mayors in Gaza have been killed by Israel.
The humanitarian crisis is worsening, with the GMO reporting that 722 personnel in the humanitarian aid sector have been killed, following the deaths of 15 more individuals in recent attacks. Medical teams and hospitals continue to be under siege, particularly Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.
Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, in a video described the dire situation in the hospital as Israeli bombs damaged essential systems, including water, oxygen, and electricity networks, and injured several medical staff and ambulance drivers during coordinated efforts to evacuate the wounded and deliver supplies.
The GMO also issued a stark warning about the systematic starvation policy affecting over 2.4 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Crossing points remain closed, and critical humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, is being obstructed, exacerbating the dire conditions faced by the population.
The regime’s bloody onslaught on Gaza has so far killed 45,028 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 106,962 others. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under rubble.
