The spokesman for Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has denounced the recent surge in terrorist activities in northern Syria, saying Syrian government forces and fighters from the Axis of Resistance will make the Zionist regime and its allies regret this new atrocities.

“They (the terrorists operating in Syria) are not opposition fighters, but rather, mercenaries of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the United States as well as regrouped remnants of Daesh and other Takfiri outfits,” Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naeini, the IRGC’s spokesman and deputy head of the Public Relations Department, said in an interview with Defa Press news agency published on Monday.

He added that the foreign-backed terrorists’ main goal is to confront the Axis of Resistance, create a new front and weaken one of the most significant components of resistance, i.e. Syria.

“The Zionist regime believes it can make up for its defeats against the Lebanese Hezbollah and resistance forces in Gaza through the engagement of the Resistance Front in Syria.

“Nevertheless, the proud Syrian Army and powerful Resistance Front will soon deliver a regret-inducing response to the new wicked adventurism of Zionists and all those who have aided this scheme,” Naeini stated.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that dozens of foreign-sponsored Takfiri militants, led by members of the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist group, were killed and injured on the outskirts of al-Safira city in Aleppo’s eastern countryside as Syrian and Russian fighter jets carried out joint targeted airstrikes.

The announcement came as Syrian army troops continued their operations to repel attacks by terrorist groups in the provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, and Hama.

The Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria also stated that 320 militants from various terrorist groups were killed over the past 24 hours as their positions were bombed across northern and west-central Syria.

Syria’s official news agency SANA, citing a military source, confirmed that the joint Syrian-Russian airstrikes had targeted key terrorist positions.

Field reports indicate significant progress by the Syrian army, as government forces have reclaimed nearly all villages in the Hama countryside.

According to Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television news channel, Syrian-Russian aerial attacks have struck militant supply routes in western Aleppo. Terrorists’ positions in Idlib are under intense bombardment as well.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reaffirmed his country’s absolute commitment to eradicating terrorism, emphasizing that the Damascus government as well as the Syrian army and nation are fairly determined to confront terror groups forcefully.

Assad highlighted the crucial role of allies and friends in countering foreign-backed terrorists and thwarting their plots, stressing that the Syrian government is utterly resolved to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and national security.

On Sunday, United Nations special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, appealed for all stakeholders in the conflict to immediately seek a political resolution.

“The latest developments pose severe risks to civilians and have serious implications for regional and international peace and security,” he said.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.

Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime’s regular aggression.

Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria in March 2011.
