Syrian president vows to eliminate terrorism with force

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad speaks in an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabic on August 9, 2023.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has vowed to use force to eradicate "terrorism," after foreign-backed terrorists launched their largest offensive in northwestern provinces in years.

Assad made the remarks during a phone call with the acting president of the Republic of Abkhazia on Sunday, according to Syria’s official news agency SANA.

"Terrorism only understands the language of force, and that is the language which we will break it and eliminate it with, whoever its supporters and sponsors are," he said.

The Syrian president noted, "We will continue to defend the stability and territorial integrity of the country, and with our allies, we are capable of striking at the terrorists and those who support them."

Assad’s remarks come as foreign-sponsored Takfiri terrorists have swept into Aleppo, the second largest city in the country, with Syrian troops now regrouping and launching a counteroffensive.

Meanwhile, Syrian Army units operating in the northern city of Hama have also strengthened their defensive lines with various firepower assets.

"Our forces operating in the northern countryside of Hama repelled terrorist organizations, preventing them from achieving any breakthroughs," a Syrian military source told SANA.

The Syrian army successfully liberated several areas after expelling terrorists, most notably Qal’at al-Madiq and the village of Ma’ardas in Hama, the source added.

The terrorists led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a large-scale attack in Aleppo and Idlib provinces in the northwest of Syria on Wednesday, seizing several areas.

Since then, the Syrian government forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with the terrorists to regain ground.

According to Syrian media outlets, nearly a thousand foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists, led by members of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group, have been killed in Syria’s northwestern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib in the past three days.

The terrorists have been killed by Syrian troops with Russian air support.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.

Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime’s regular aggression.

Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria in March 2011.
