Iran’s foreign minister says Takfiri terrorist groups in Syria made a miscalculation by launching their ongoing assault on the Arab country's army positions.
Abbas Araghchi made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Sunday night upon his arrival in Turkey’s capital Ankara after a visit to Syria.
He said terrorist groups believed the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and Palestine had provided them with an opportunity to achieve their goals in Syria.
Araghchi stressed that the Syrian army and government are capable of defeating terrorists, but Iran and resistance groups will offer any necessary support.
Elaborating on his plans in Turkey, the foreign minister said he would have an extensive meeting with Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss the two countries’ common concerns.
The Iranian top diplomat expressed hope that Tehran and Ankara would reach an understanding on regional issues that would lead to stability in the region and prevent Syria from becoming a hub for terrorists.
He expressed confidence that Syria will defeat terrorist groups this time, as it had done in the past.
He reaffirmed Iran’s full support for Syria to counter acts of aggression by the Israeli regime and terrorist groups.
Speaking to reporters before his departure, the Iranian foreign minister said Iran makes no distinction between the Israeli regime and the Takfiri terrorists.
Earlier, in Damascus Araghchi said Tehran will insist on its principled stance to fully support the Syrian government, nation and army in the fight against terrorism and safeguard regional security and stability.
The visit came a few days after terror outfits led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched their largest assault in Syria in years and took control of parts of the country's second-biggest city, Aleppo, and advanced southward toward the city of Hama.
The Syrian army announced later that it thwarted the large-scale terrorist operations through a preemptive strike.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad expressed his appreciation for the support of the Iranian government and nation and sent his greetings to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Assad commended Iran’s strong stance on support for the stability and security of the countries in the region, particularly Syria, in their battle against the vicious phenomenon of terrorism.
Assad urged all regional countries to make all-out efforts to eradicate terrorism, saying only the enemies of Muslim countries, especially the Israeli regime, are benefiting from the scourge.
Assad hailed the Iranian foreign minister’s meaningful visit to Syria under the current sensitive circumstances which shows Iran’s message of support for the countries of the resistance front in the face of the Israeli regime.
