Indonesia’s new government has called for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take "decisive action" against the Israeli regime over its siege of northern Gaza.

“Indonesia demands that Israel immediately stop its attacks across all of Gaza, particularly northern Gaza, and urges the UN Security Council to take decisive action to end the war without delay,” Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement came two days after Prabowo Subianto was sworn in as the new president.

The Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli attacks and called for lifting the total blockade of northern Gaza by the Zionist forces.

“Indonesia strongly condemns the total blockade and Israeli attacks that have caused severe hunger and the deaths of countless Palestinian civilians in northern Gaza.”

It also condemned the Israeli regime forces strikes on healthcare facilities and medical workers in northern Gaza, including the Zionist forces strikes on the Indonesia Hospital in Beit Lahia, as “clear violations of international law, international humanitarian law and fundamental human rights.”

The Indonesia Hospital in Beit Lahia, run by the country's Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C), is one of just three partially running hospitals in northern Gaza.

“The medics and patients are still holding out inside the hospital. They don’t want to be evacuated because the patients are not in a condition to do so,” Sarbini Abdul Murad, chairman of MER-C’s board of trustees in Jakarta, told media.

Murad said he was last in touch with the hospital staff on Tuesday morning.

“They destroyed solar panels and power generators and are withholding food and medical supplies from the Indonesia Hospital,” he said.

“We are very concerned about the people who are trapped inside.”

The Foreign Ministry's statement reiterated Jakarta's long-standing support for the Palestinian nation.

Subianto, in his first presidential speech, said that the country was ready “to help our brothers who became victims of an unfair war.”

Israeli forces, which have been carrying out extensive raids in northern Gaza for at least 17 days, attacked a shelter near the Indonesian Hospital where Palestinians had taken refuge. The Israeli forces arrested the Palestinian men staying at the shelter.

Israel has killed at least 42,700 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. More than 100,000 have also been injured.
