Syria has strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrike on the central city of Palmyra that killed three dozen people, saying the brutal aggression reflects the occupying entity’s ongoing crimes in the region.

In a statement published on the website of Syria's official news agency SANA on Wednesday, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates denounced in the strongest terms the brutal Zionist regime’s airstrike that targeted some residential buildings in the city.

“The Zionist entity committed a horrific crime in Palmyra today, which claimed the lives of 36 citizens and injured dozens of others in the air aggression carried out by Israeli aircraft, targeting a number of residential buildings and causing material damage to the buildings and surrounding area,” the ministry said.

The ministry also stressed that the crimes committed by the Tel Aviv regime in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine represent a significant threat to regional security and stability.

“Syria calls on all countries of the world to take a firm stance to stop the atrocious massacres committed by the occupying entity in the region and hold its leaders accountable for their crimes and aggression and ensure that they do not escape punishment,” the statement further read.

In a separate report, SANA, citing an unnamed military source, said that the Israeli attack occurred at 1:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday (1030 GMT) and came from the direction of al-Tanf in the US-occupied part of the central province of Homs.

“The aggression resulted in the injury of more than 50 others,” the source told the news agency, adding that material damage to the targeted buildings and the surrounding area was “significant.”

Palmyra’s ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its historical Roman temple complex, which suffered significant damage during the outbreak of the Western-backed war in Syria in 2011.

The city was captured by the Daesh terrorist group in 2015 before it was recaptured by the Syrian army, which ended a 10-month ordeal that saw the destruction of some of the historical site’s most famed monuments.

Since 2011, Israel has been carrying out numerous strikes on the Arab country.
