Iran launches housing project in Bu Musa island

Iran launches a project to build 110 residential units in Bu Musa island in the Persian Gulf.

Iran’s government has ordered the start of a housing project on the island of Bu Musa in the Persian Gulf, just days after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) repeated claims on the island.

A deputy head of Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development (MRUD) said on Monday that the administrative process had started for a project to build 110 residential units in Bu Musa.

Arsalan Maleki said that local authorities in the southern province of Hormozgan, where Bu Musa is located, had been notified of the project, adding that construction of the houses will begin soon.

The announcement comes just days after Iranian authorities dismissed a joint statement issued by the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union which endorsed claims by the UAE on Bu Musa and two other Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf.

Iran has repeatedly reiterated that Bu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb have always been part of Iran.

“Definitely, the Bu Musa island is an inseparable part of the territorial lands of the Islamic Republic of Iran and construction is allowed on Bu Musa based on the laws of our country and housing plans on the island will be executed,” said Maleki in an interview with the semi-official ILNA news agency.

The official said that the MRUD is obliged by the laws adopted by the Iranian government to expand housing on Bu Musa.

He said the new houses will be supplied to local people as well as applicants from other parts of Iran who seek to live in the area.
