Iran expects major surge in Syria exports amid ongoing unrest

Iran expects its exports to Kurdish areas in Syria to increase amid the ongoing unrest in the country.

Iranian businesses expect their exports to Syria via Iraq would increase significantly following the fall of the government in Damascus which has led to a period of political and economic uncertainty in the country.

Secretary general of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce said on Wednesday that Iran has been exporting goods and commodities to Syria via a transit corridor that passes through the Iraqi Kurdistan region and leads to an unofficial border crossing with Kurdish regions in northeast Syria.

Jahanbakhsh Sanjabi said that the recent fall of the government in Syria will definitely lead to increased prices of energy and basic goods in the country and will create a major demand for imports.

“The continued unrest in Syria could lead to an increase in exports of goods from Iran to Iraq and further to Syria,” Sanjabi told the ILNA news agency.

Iraq is the second largest buyer of Iranian exports with more than $10 billion worth of annual purchases.

The Arab country imported $8.3 billion worth of shipments from Iran in the eight calendar months to November 20, according to figures released by the Iranian customs office earlier this week.

Iran was planning to significantly expand its economic relations with Syria, including its land and sea exports to the country, when former president Bashar al-Assad was in power.

However, Assad left Syria unexpectedly last week, leaving the power to several armed groups that reached the capital Damascus over the weekend.
