Iran resolutely opposes any border, geopolitical changes: FM Araghchi

Nurduz border crossing between Iran and Armenia

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the Islamic Republic resolutely opposes any border and geopolitical changes in various regions.

In a phone conversation with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric on Friday, Araghchi "emphasized the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in supporting the territorial integrity of Serbia and its principled opposition to border and geopolitical changes in various regions," according to a statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Araghchi did not name a specific region but Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's recent remarks expressing support for Azerbaijan's demand to get unimpeded access to its Nakhchivan exclave by opening the Zangezur transport corridor through Armenia have drawn criticism in Iran.

Moscow and Baku want Russia to monitor and control the corridor, but Yerevan and Tehran are opposed to such a scheme.

The Iranian foreign minister on Thursday described any threats to the territorial integrity of neighboring countries or redrawing of boundaries as a red line for the Islamic Republic.

“Regional peace, security and stability are not merely a preference, but a pillar of our national security. Any threat from north, south, east, or west to territorial integrity of our neighbors or redrawing of boundaries is totally unacceptable and a red line for Iran,” Araghchi said on X.

The top Iranian diplomat also told his Serbian counterpart that improving cordial relations between the two countries and promoting stability in the Balkans are among the approaches of the country’s foreign policy.

He stressed the importance of making use of all mechanisms to expand relations between Iran and Serbia, particularly in the economic and commercial sectors.

Djuric, for his part, commended Iran’s support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and expressed hope that the two countries will further boost friendly ties.

He invited Iran’s economic sector to participate in Expo 2027 Belgrade, which is scheduled to be held from May to August 2027.

Zangezur dreams will never come true: Ambassador

Iran’s Ambassador to Yerevan Mehdi Sobhani reiterated Tehran’s opposition to any corridor which breaches Armenia’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

He asserted that, “Dreams related to issues like Zangezur will never come true.”

Iran believes that Armenia should take control of this region inside its territory and opposes the idea that outsiders can ensure security, he added.
