The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has condemned Israel’s attacks against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged terrirtoy.

ASEAN foreign ministers made the remarks in a joint statement issued after the bloc’s summit in the capital city of Vientiane, Laos, on Saturday.

“We condemn all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, which have resulted in the alarming number of casualties, particularly women and children, the restricted access to food, water, and other basic needs, leading to the further deterioration of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” they said.

The foreign ministers further expressed “grave concern” about the humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave, calling for “rapid, safe, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access to all those in need through increased capacity at border crossings including by sea.”

They also reiterated their support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), calling on ASEAN member states to continue providing assistance to Gaza.

ASEAN foreign ministers also urged all relevant parties to accept the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel launched the devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 39,258 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 90,500 others.

Israel has failed to abide by UN ceasefire resolutions. It has also not complied with the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to cease its genocidal actions in Gaza and “immediately halt” its operations in the southernmost city of Rafah.
