The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says a quarter of a million people have been impacted by Israel’s latest evacuation order for parts of southern Gaza.
UNRWA spokeswoman Louise Wateridge said on Tuesday the agency estimates “around 250,000 people had been impacted by these orders.”
“We expect these numbers to grow.”
“We’ve seen people moving, families moving, people starting to pack up their belongings and try to leave this area.”
On Monday, Israel issued a new evacuation order for parts of Khan Yunis and Rafah in southern Gaza. It followed mass displacement from large parts of Rafah that began with a similar order nearly two months ago.
“This is another devastating blow to the humanitarian response here,” Wateridge said.
“It’s another devastating blow for the people and the families on the ground. It seems that they are forcibly being displaced again, and again.”
She said following the start of the Rafah incursion in May, people had flooded back into the largely destroyed Khan Yunis area.
“And now already, because of the orders last night, the same families are having to move again.”
“There is absolutely no safe place in the Gaza Strip.”
Just weeks after people were forced to return to a devastated Khan Younis, Israeli authorities have issued new evacuation orders for the area.

Yet again, families face forced displacement. We estimate 250,000 people will have to flee. Even though nowhere is safe in #Gaza. pic.twitter.com/OReO4D5E0d
Witnesses saw Palestinians leave eastern Khan Yunis on foot, in cars and on horse or donkey carts, carrying their belongings with them. Some displaced people with nowhere to go were sleeping on the streets, witnesses said.
Ahmad Najjar, a resident of the town of Bani Suhaila, said the Israeli evacuation order had caused a large displacement of residents and spurred fear and extreme anxiety.
The Israeli military has warned residents and displaced Palestinians in Khan Younis to move to the western part of the city.
Hundreds of Palestinian patients have also been forced to flee the European Hospital. Tent camps for the displaced in Khan Younis have been evacuated.
Israeli forces carried out deadly strikes in southern Gaza on Tuesday.
