The UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory has praised Spain for backing South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

Francesca Albanese in a Monday post on X platform welcomed Spain’s decision to join South Africa’s case against Israel over its war on Gaza, which has killed more than 37,900 Palestinians since October 7, 2023.

Albanese said she hoped the move by Spain was the beginning of a similar action by more Western countries to “stand on the right side of history.”

“Words of condemnation are meaningless without action. In fact, decades of mere words have allowed Israel to escalate its lawlessness towards the Palestinians into #genocide,” she wrote.

Kudos to #Spain for joining #SouthAfrica's genocide case against Israel at the @CIJ_ICJ. I hope this marks the beginning of more Western countries taking similar actions. It’s not too late to stand on the right side of history.

Moreover, Albanese in another post called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for the "mastermind" of Israel’s genocidal policies, Bezalel Smotrich.

Presenting her report titled “Anatomy of a Genocide” to the Human Rights Council, Albanese said, "The dehumanization of Palestinians as a group is the hallmark of their history — of ethnic cleansing, dispossession and apartheid.”

Her report, which was published in March, said there are “reasonable grounds” to believe Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

In her report, Albanese said that Israel has committed at least three underlining acts of genocide proscribed in the Geneva Convention, namely killing, inflicting harm and transferring children, in addition to other acts, including deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction, in whole or in part.

Albanese's recent remarks come as Spain has requested to join the genocide case that was initiated late last year by South Africa at the ICJ against the Israeli regime.

The Hague-based tribunal ordered the Israeli regime to implement steps to prevent genocidal acts and allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.

Following South Africa’s complaint, several other countries, including Turkey, Libya, Nicaragua, Colombia, Egypt, Belgium, Ireland, Mexico, and Chile, submitted requests to join the case.

Spain along with Ireland and Norway has recognized the Palestinian state.
