The martyrdom of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will not disrupt the country's regional and international role, the Foreign Ministry says.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry offered its condolences to the noble Iranian nation over the passing of the popular president and his foreign minister as well as their companions.

It said the martyrdom of these prominent figures will undoubtedly cause no disruption in the determination of the country's diplomatic apparatus to serve national interests and will not impact the Islamic Republic's "positive and constructive" role in regional and global equations.

Over the past three years, Raeisi and Amir-Abdollahian, as Iran's president and foreign minister, played an eternal and crucial role in the history of Iran’s foreign policy, it added.

They made great efforts to improve Iran's status in the international arena, and promote convergence and cordial bonds among regional countries and nations, it noted.

The ministry also hailed great efforts by the late Iranian president and foreign minister to forge constructive relations in the international system and support the establishment of justice in the region and the world.

The ministry also expressed its sincere gratitude to world leaders and nations, political and religious figures as well as international organizations for their sympathy with the Iranian people and government.

The Iranian president, foreign minister and their accompanying delegation lost their lives after the helicopter carrying them crashed in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan due to harsh weather conditions on Sunday. Their bodies were found on Monday after a massive night-long search operation.

Bagheri Kani named caretaker foreign minister

Following the martyrdom of Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri Kani was appointed as head of the international committee and caretaker foreign minister.

Bagheri Kani, who is also Iran's chief negotiator with major world powers to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, was appointed to the post by First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, government spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi said.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Monday that as per Article 131 of the Constitution, Mokhber assumes interim duties in leading the executive branch.
