Iran-Russia relations

The commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Force has met with his Russian counterpart in Moscow. Brigadier General Kioumars Heidari says Tehran is ready to expand cooperation with the Russian Ground Forces. During the meeting, the two sides discussed joint projects to boost the readiness of the two country’s armed forces. General Oleg Salyukov described Iran as Russia’s strategic partner and a key country in West Asia. He said the two countries are currently discussing ways for further expansion of bilateral ties. General Heidari, who heads a military delegation during his trip to Russia, is to visit Russian Ground Forces’ academies and the country’s military-industrial complexes. Russia and Iran, both under Western sanctions, have forged closer relations in military and other areas in recent years.

Violence against Palestinians

The UN special envoy for the Middle East has called on Israel to stop the demolition of Palestinian structures and the displacement of Palestinians. Addressing a Security Council session, Wennesland also pointed to Israel’s expansionist policy in the occupied Palestinian territories. The UN official stressed that all Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. Wennesland also denounced violent treatment of Palestinians by Israeli forces and settlers. He said perpetrators of acts of violence must be held accountable. Further in his remarks, Wennesland described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as dire.

Niger political crisis

West Africa's main regional bloc has rejected a proposal by Niger's military leaders to hold elections for transition to a civilian rule within three years. ECOWAS commissioner said the bloc wants Niger’s president Mohamed Bazoum to be released without preconditions and constitutional order restored without further delay. Abdel-Fatau Musah’s remarks came after an ECOWAS delegation visited Niger’s capital and met with the deposed president and the military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani. ECOWAS has threated military intervention if talks with Niger’s military government fail. In a televised address on Saturday, Tiani said the country’s military leaders are open to dialogue to avert a conflict with ECOWAS. He, however, warned that in case of an aggression, the country is ready to defend itself.
