Israel political crisis
Israel's top trade union chief has announced a general strike in response to the cabinet’s judicial reforms, as street protests against the controversial plan continue. Israeli media say most departures at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv are halted. Two main ports have also stopped working. The Israel Medical Association has also announced a full strike in the health system, impacting all public hospitals. Israel’s Foreign Ministry union instructed Israeli embassies worldwide to join the strike too. The Israeli president has urged the cabinet to halt its plan to protect what he called the unity of people. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked his military affairs minister for opposing the reform plan. Last night, there were massive street protests that descended into clashes between security forces and demonstrators. The Israeli cabinet has plunged into chaos over its proposed judicial reforms. Mass protests continue as Netanyahu sacks his military chief who opposed the overhaul.
Afghanistan suicide attack
Afghanistan’s interior ministry says a suicide attack near the country’s foreign ministry has killed at least six civilians and wounded several others. The ministry says the attacker was targeted by Afghan forces at a security checkpoint but his explosives detonated. The area houses several government buildings. Officials say at least three Taliban members were among the wounded. No group has claimed responsibility so far. Kabul and other urban areas have been hit by attacks in recent months, some of which have been claimed by Daesh. A blast in January killed at least five people and injured dozens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Russia-Ukraine war
A top Russian security official says NATO countries are a party to the conflict in Ukraine. Secretary of Russia's Security Council Nikolai Patrushev said NATO member states turned Ukraine into a big military camp by sending weapons and ammunition to the Ukrainian troops and providing them with intelligence. Russia has repeatedly said Western military assistance to Ukraine only prolongs the war and adds to the suffering of Ukrainian people. The US and the EU have already pumped billions of dollars of military aid into Ukraine since the start of the war in February 2022.
