Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi has called for the continuation of close relations and contacts with Iran, hailing Tehran's stance on mutual ties and regional and international developments.

In a Saturday phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the top Omani diplomat expressed hope that Iran and the P4+1 group of countries would take final steps to reach an agreement on the revival of the landmark 2015 agreement in the Austrian capital of Vienna as soon as possible.

Iran and the P4+1 group of countries -- Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China -- started the Vienna talks last April on a potential revival of the 2015 deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The United States left the deal in 2018 and returned the sanctions that it had lifted.

Iran demands that the US provide guarantees that it will not leave the deal again and resume the coercive economic measures.

In the phone call, Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran and Muscat enjoy close relations and hoped the two sides would further improve ties.

The top Iranian diplomat commended Oman's "constructive" role in resolving some issues pertaining to the release of two British prisoners.

His remarks came after Iran on Wednesday released two dual British-Iranian nationals -- Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anousheh Ashouri -- jailed for involvement in espionage activities against the Islamic Republic. The pair left Iran for the UK via Oman.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh has also thanked the constructive role played by the “brotherly and friendly country of Oman” in the process of releasing the prisoners.
