For the first time in a decade, Muslim-majority Kashmir in India will hold an election for its regional legislature. This will be the first vote in a new political environment after India’s ruling party stripped the region of its semi-autonomy and downgraded it to a federally-controlled territory. Kashmir’s two main regional parties, the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, have centered their campaigning on restoration of the region’s special status.
