Schumer denounces Republicans who believe Trump will be reinstated president later this year

US Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer has said that the number of Republicans who believe former President Donald Trump will be reinstated as president later this year represents a “glaring warning,” to the American political system. 

Referencing a recent Politico-Morning Consult poll that found that approximately 3 in 10 Republicans believe that Trump will become commander in chief again later this year, Schumer on Thursday expressed concerns on continued widespread acceptance of Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him by current Democratic President Joe Biden. 

The Politico-Morning Consult Poll published on Wednesday found the vast majority of Americans dismiss the idea that Trump will be reinstated as president, however, 29 percent of Republicans said they believe Trump will be place in Oval Office again. 

Last week, NEW York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said that Trump has been telling people in his inner circle that he believes he will be reinstated by August of this year. She added that he has also been urging conservative media to highlight his theory of a “rigged” election.

Schumer said the nearly 30 percent of Republicans who supported Trump’s claim “is a depressing fact of our times that there is an audience out there who will literally believe anything the former president says, no matter how unrealistic or untrue.” 

“They believe him when he just abjectly lies,” Schumer said, adding, “It is a glaring warning that the big lie has created fertile ground for all sorts of insane conspiracy.” 

“Of course, the idea of 'reinstatement' comes from disgraced former President Trump himself and is nothing more than the deluded ramblings of a defeated politician,” the Democratic leader said. 

He denounced his Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill, arguing “Washington Republicans and the political right” have “not done enough to stand up to the big lie.” 

“After making a few brave noises in the wake of Jan. 6, Republican leadership here in Washington now seem to have traded political courage and truth for appeasement,” he said. 

Schumer said that the “Republican Party is now wrapped around the axle of the big lie,” adding that a “big reason” for this is because “Republican leaders are unwilling to move on from Trumpism.”

“The truth is: The big lie has consequences,” the Senate leader added. “It erodes our trust in elections, faith in our democracy, and it’s gnawing away at the very right to vote in America.”

Another recent poll shows about 53 percent of Republican Party voters say Trump is currently the "true president" of the United States, not Biden.

According to the last month Ipsos/Reuters poll of over 2,000 US adults, 56 percent of Republicans still believe the November presidential election was "rigged or the result of illegal voting."

In November, Trump said Biden “won” the presidential election because the vote was "rigged."

Trump seems to have implicitly conceded defeat to Joe Biden while claims the election was rigged.

On January 6, a group of mobs supporting Trump launched a deadly assault on the US Capitol, disrupting briefly the certification of the election results.

The assault, which left five people dead, including a member of law enforcement, prompted a historic second impeachment trial against Trump, but the Republican-controlled Senate acquitted the former president.
