Iran warns against Europe's procrastination in saving JCPOA

The Iranian administration’s spokesman says the European parties to a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran can prevent the country from further reducing its nuclear commitments only by remaining fully committed to their obligations.

Ali Rabiei made the remarks in a press conference Monday in reference to a set of nuclear countermeasures, which Iran started in May to prompt the European side to mind its duties under the accord.

France, Britain, and Germany have failed to protect Iran’s business interests under the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), after the United States left the accord and began pressuring the European signatories into freezing trade with Tehran.

The threesome launched a non-dollar trade mechanism in January, which is yet to be implemented.

They have even threatened to trigger a “dispute mechanism” within the JCPOA in response to Iran’s retaliatory nuclear steps.

Rabiei said Iran suspects that the Europeans will not activate the trigger mechanism or compromise the JCPOA.

“All the important Southeast Asian countries, our Eastern [hemisphere] friends and partners, as well as Europeans somehow insist on continued commitment to the JCPOA,” he said.

The spokesperson also referred to Hassan Rouhani’s recent visits to Malaysia and Japan, during which the Iranian president lobbied against the US “economic terrorism” targeting the Iranian nation.

Rabiei said the trips showed that the Islamic Republic fully employs its domestic and international potential as it fights the inhumane sanctions, and uses all available diplomatic capacities to enhance its international standing while preserving national interests.

The official also pointed to the participation in Kuala Lumpur Summit 2019 by Iran, Malaysia, Turkey, and Qatar. As the Muslim world’s prominent economic actors, he noted, the quartet’s participation in the event served as an important step against the US unilateralism and acts of economic terrorism targeting world nations.

“The goal is to reach a point, where the US would find itself at a loss if it fails to initiate negotiations with Iran or to lift the inhumane sanctions,” he noted.
