The Iran men’s national futsal team, domestically known as Team Melli Futsal, has posted its first resounding win at the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Championship, thrashing Myanmar in the group stage of the continental tournament.
On Friday, the Iranians routed the Southeast Asian squad 14-0 in their opening Group C fixture at the University of Taipei Gymnasium in Taipei.
Mahdi Javid and Ali Asghar Hassanzadeh scored four goals each for the Iranian outfit.
Hossein Tayebi was on target three times, while Mehran Alighadr, Saeid Ahmad Abbasi and Moslem Oladghoba had a goal each to their names.
Earlier, Iran’s head coach Mohammad Nazemosharia had said Team Melli Futsal would not take anything for granted against Myanmar.
“There is no doubt that there has been great investment into futsal in Asia, and we have seen lots of changes… We have prepared ourselves well for this tournament, and we are expecting some really nice games,” Nazemosharia commented.
The Iran men’s national futsal team will next play China on Sunday.
The 2018 AFC Futsal Championship, which is the 15th edition of the games, opened on February 1 and will close on February 11 in Chinese Taipei.
Asian powerhouse Iran is pitted against China, Iraq and Myanmar in Group C.
Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Vietnam are drawn in Group A.
Group B consists of Japan, South Korea, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon and Thailand form Group D.
Team Melli Futsal holds a record of 11 championship titles, and the team has enjoyed much success in recent years.
