Iran trounces Qatar 65-39 in 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifier

The Iranian men’s national basketball team has recovered its composure at the Asian qualification round of the 2019 Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA) World Cup, and recorded an emphatic win over the Qatari side in its second fixture.

On Monday evening, the Iranian team, which had lost to the Iraqi side 66-74 in its opening Group D fixture of the tournament in the Jordanian capital city of Amman on November 24, started the first quarter of the game at Azadi Basketball Hall in western Tehran in a strong fashion, and employed a string of attacks and blocks to outscore the Qatari squad 20-12.

The Iranians kept up momentum in the second quarter, and took it by 13 points to 7 as they faced little resistance from their Qatari counterparts.

The Iranians did not look back as the match went into the third quarter, and recorded a four-point advantage and clinched the quarter 16-12.

The Persians continued to shot baskets in the final frame, and closed the quarter at 16-8.

The Iranian men’s national basketball team is scheduled to play against Kazakhstan on February 22.

The Asian qualification round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup will determine six teams that will participate in the 18th edition of the international tournament for men's national basketball teams.

Iran is pitted against Iraq, Kazakhstan and Qatar in Group D of the qualification competitions.

China, Hong Kong, New Zealand and South Korea are in Group A.

Group B consists of Australia, Chinese Taipei, Japan and the Philippines. India, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria are drawn in Group C.
