Iran suffers shock loss at 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification

The Iranian men’s national basketball team has been beaten by Iraq in the Asian qualification round of the 2019 Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA) World Cup.

On Friday evening, the Iranian outfit, which had Oshin Sahakian, Farid Aslani, Vahid Delirzahan, Navid Niktash, Mohammad Jamshidi Jafarabadi, Amir Sedighi, Sajjad Mashayekhi, Arsalan Kazemi Naeini, Arman Zangeneh, Kayvan Riaei, Rouzbeh Arghavan and Mohammad Hassanzadeh Saberi Akhlaghi, in its line-up, lost to the Iraqi side 66-74 in its opening Group D fixture of the tournament in the Jordanian capital city of Amman.

The Iranian men’s national basketball team is scheduled to face Qatar in its second match in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on November 27.

The Asian qualification round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup will determine six teams that will participate in the 18th edition of the international tournament for men's national basketball teams.

Iran is pitted against Iraq, Kazakhstan and Qatar in Group D of the qualification competitions.

China, Hong Kong, New Zealand and South Korea are in Group A.

Group B consists of Australia, Chinese Taipei, Japan and the Philippines. India, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria are drawn in Group C.
