The Iranian men’s national basketball team

The Iranian men’s national basketball team has achieved another victory at the 2016 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, defeating the Indian contingent.

On Sunday morning, the Iranian squad, which had registered a 73-65 victory over Japan the previous day, defeated the Indian basketball team 71-56 in its last encounter of the international tournament at the Hsinchuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City.

The Iranian sportsmen opened the game vigorously and well managed to assume the lead, and edge past the Indians 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.

They, however, failed to uphold superiority in the second quarter, and lost it by 17 points to 21.

The Iranian basketball players rebounded from the loss in the second quarter, and made diverse attacks and blocks to end the third quarter 24-19.

The Iranians did not give up their efforts afterwards, and emerged strong on all fronts throughout the final quarter. They could notch up an emphatic 15-6 win at last.

The 2016 William Jones Cup started in Taiwan on July 23 and will conclude on July 31. The event is a top-level international basketball tournament of FIBA Asia.

Iran is preparing for the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge, which will open on home soil on September 9 and will run through September 18. This tournament will serve as the first step in determining qualifiers for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup.

The 2017 FIBA Asia Championship, which will be the 29th continental basketball championship in Asia, will bring together teams from both FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania for the first time.
