The Iranian national junior basketball team has crushed Indonesia at the group stage of the 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship, and breezed past the Southeast Asian squad by a nearly three-fold lead.
The young Iranian athletes conquered their Indonesian counterparts 106-40 in their Group B opener of the event staged at Azadi Sports Complex, western Tehran, on Friday evening.
The Iranian men’s junior basketball team is slated to face Kazakhstan at 6:00 p.m. local time (1330 GMT) on Saturday.
The Iranian players will face counterparts from Japan, South Korea and Lebanon in their third to fifth encounters.
The 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship, which marks the 24th edition of the continental sports event, started in the Iranian capital on July 22, and will run through July 31.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is drawn in Group B of the preliminary round of the sports event, and has joined Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon and South Korea.
Group A consists of China, Chinese Taipei, India, Iraq, the Philippines and Thailand.
The teams placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in each group will qualify directly for the quarterfinal round.
