The national Iranian men’s handball team has failed to edge past the hosts at the 2016 Olympic Qualification Tournaments in Sweden, and suffered a straight-period loss.
On Friday, the Iranian squad lost out to the Swedes in a match played at the multi-purpose and indoor Malmo Arena in Sweden’s southern city of Malmo.
The Swedish handball players began the game played on a high note and proved their dominance throughout the first period.
They showed they were strong-minded, and could finally claim the first period 16-9.
The Swedish handball team did not relinquish and maintained their lead as the match extended into the second period.
They eventually emerged triumphant at the end of the period due to a higher scoreline, and defeated the Persians 34-19.
The Iranian team is scheduled to take on Spain in its second match on Saturday.
Iranian hand players will play against Slovenian counterparts in their third showdown the following day.
The Olympic Qualification Tournaments started on April 8 and will wrap up on April 10, 2016. They are currently underway 2016 in Poland’s Gdansk, Swedish city of Malmo as well as Denmark’s Herning on the Jutland Peninsula.
Iran is competing against Sweden, Slovenia and Spain in Tournament 2 to secure a berth at the 2016 Men's Olympic Handball Tournament, which will be held from August 6 to 21 at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Denmark, Croatia, Norway and Bahrain are testing their supremacy during Tournament 3 matches in the Danish city of Hening.
