The Iranian national team has notched up its first victory at the 17th edition of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship in Bahrain, overcoming the Lebanese side.
On Sunday evening, the Iranian squad, which had conceded 21-26 to Saudi Arabia in its Group B opening match, exhibited admirable skills and strength during a competitive game at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium, also known as Isa Town Stadium, in Isa Town, and defeated Lebanon 31-26.
Iran will return to action on Tuesday, when it takes on China in its third group stage match.
Japan, Oman, South Korea and Syria are in Group A of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship.
Iran has been drawn in Group B along with host Bahrain, China, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knock-out stage, where winners will face off for the gold medal and losers settle for the third-place fixture – both scheduled for January 28.
The 17th edition of the Asian Men’s Handball Championship, which serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2017 Men’s Handball World Championship in France, opened in Bahrain on January 15, and will finish on January 28.
A great proportion of the games are set to be played at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town, but a selection of placement matches will be staged at Bahrain Handball Federation Hall in the Bahraini capital city of Manama.
