Iran judoka Mahjoub snatches bronze in Dusseldorf Grand Prix

Iranian judo practitioner Javad Mahjoub has won a bronze medal at the Dusseldorf Grand Prix 2016 in Germany after defeating his Portuguese opponent.

On Sunday, the final day of competitions at the Mitsubishi Electric Halle, the 24-year-old Iranian athlete prevailed over Jorge Fonseca in the men's under 100-kilogram weight division with an ippon in 51 seconds.

Earlier, Russia’s powerful Adlan Bisultanov had overcome Martin Pacek from Sweden, and snatched the first bronze medal.

In the final encounter of the category, German judoka Dimitri Peters gave the crowd something to smile about when he overcame Cuba’s Jose Armenteros in just over two minutes.

The 31-year-old, who settled for bronze in the 2012 Summer Olympics, proved unstoppable throughout the competition, and won all his fights by ippon in his march to the showpiece match.

The Dusseldorf Grand Prix 2016 opened in Germany on February 19, and wrapped up on February 21, 2016.

On February 14, Mahjoub exhibited an outstanding display at the European Open for Men in Austria, and snatched a gold medal at the high-status sporting event.

Mahjoub shone in the minus 100-kilogram weight class in the city of Oberwart, and scooped the top honor.

He prevailed over Austrian Aaron Fara in his first contest, before defeating Jalil Shukurov, a representative from Azerbaijan, in the next bout and progressing to the semi-final.

Mahjoub overwhelmed Italian competitor Vincenzo D Arco and booked the ticket for the final showdown, where he conquered Arsen Omarov from Russia and won the gold medal.

Cuban Jose Armentros and Italian Vincenzo D Arco shared the bronze medal.
